1910 UNC Edward VII Silver Half Crown CGS 78. Bertie, as Prince of Wales, is perhaps best known for a series of amorous liaisons, which his mother did not approve of. The most commonly known of his mistresses were Lily Langtry (pictured right) , Sarah Bernhardt and Alice Keppel. (Great grandmother of Camilla Parker-Bowles) and Carolina Otero pictured below left. Edward possessed an infectious gaiety and joie de vivre. He loved horse racing and the theatre. He also smoked thirteen large cigars and twenty-two cigarettes a day and had an insatiable appetite, but was good natured and easy going with a ready smile. He was affable and approachable in a way that his mother never was. Edward VII proved to be a popular King, he had great social skills and was a good diplomat. He carefully fostered relationships with other countries and was largely responsible for the Entente Cordiale with France, which provided Britain with an ally in Europe. Due to his family relationship with many of the sovereigns of Europe, he was often referred to as the Uncle of Europe. King Edward VII pictured right. William IV AUNC 1836 Half Crown CGS 75. William was born at Buckingham Palace in London on 21 August 1765. From the early 1790s until 1811, William lived with his mistress, the actress Dorothy Jordan. They had ten children who took the surname Fitzclarence. The death of the prince regent’s only daughter in 1818 resulted in a scramble amongst George’s brothers to marry and produce heirs. The same year, William married Princess Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen. With the death of George III’s second son, William became heir and then, with the death of George IV, king in June 1830. He was initially very popular, his insistence on a simple coronation contrasting with the extravagance of his brother’s reign. The 1832 Reform Act abolished some of the worst abuses of the electoral system and extended the franchise to the middle classes. William died on 20 June 1837, without surviving children. His niece Victoria succeeded him. King William IV to the right Dorothea (Dorothy) Jordan mistress below right. Spink 3834 AUNC 1836 William IV Half Crown CGS 75.
